PRIN - Bando 2022
Duration: 2023 - 2025
Principal Investigator: Lucia Simonato
The research project proposes a multi-perspective study of the public of the Galleria Borghese from the time of its acquisition by the Italian State to the threshold of the Second World War: a fifty-year period (1888-1938) that was crucial both in the institutional establishment of the museum and the new valorization of its collections, and in the formation of a national idea of conservation science and cultural heritage. Far from being a uniform mass, the public(s) offer(s) us a multiplicity of gazes that linger on the Borghese masterpieces and find various forms of literary and visual expression in the period in question. From the connoisseur to the writer, from the photographer to the artist, each of these visitors contributes, through articles, diaries, books, drawings or photographs, to the writing of a choral paratext that gives us an extremely dynamic image of the museum. The Galleria Borghese lends itself as an object of study because of the international relevance of its collections and the richness of its archival funds. It is the ideal case study to measure the complexity of the objectual, political, institutional, emotional, visual and cultural dynamics that act in or around the museum, studied in its museographic and catalographic logics as a reacting device both in a material sphere (conservation and restoration) and in an ideological sphere (the social and educational vocation, the relationship with governmental authorities).
